Toward National Buddhism: Thích Nhất Hạnh on Buddhist Nationalism and Modernity in the journal Phật Giáo Việt Nam, 1956-1959
Published in the Journal of Vietnamese Studies (2024), this article examines Thich Nhat Hanh’s early life and advocacy for a Buddhist organization that could support nation-building and help bring peace and democracy to Vietnam.

My chapter in Republican Vietnam, 1963-1975: War, Society, Diaspora (University of Hawai‘i Press, 2023) examines the history of the School of Youth for Social Service, founded in wartime South Vietnam as a pioneering model of socially engaged Buddhism.
